Is counselling/psychotherapy for me?

Counselling provides a safe space for you to talk freely and without being judged.  It is completely confidential (apart from in exceptional circumstances).  Your counsellor will explain these exceptions at the Assessment appointment.  If you decide that counselling is not for you, we can provide you with/guide you to alternative support routes if needed.


Does counselling help?

For many people counselling does help.  It can help you to make sense of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, whilst improving your psychological and emotional well-being.  What we do say to clients is that counselling is not a quick fix.  Some people may only need or want a few sessions, but for others it can take much longer to achieve sustainable positive change.  Counselling is most effective when clients are willing to engage and are committed to attending on a regular basis.


I don't want to waste anyone's time.  Am I worrying unnecessarily?

If something feels like a problem to you, then it is!  No matter what the issue is, or the severity of it, we assure all of our clients that they are not, and will not, be wasting our time or resources.  What matters to us is that you feel emotionally well.


How do I access IMPACT’s counselling service?

You can refer yourself (or someone else) by telephoning 01952 223165, emailing  or by asking a professional to pass on your details to us so that we can contact you.


How much will it cost?

We try to make our service as affordable as possible for our clients, so fees are scaled and based upon family household income.


Do you have a waiting list?


At our busiest times we do have to operate a waiting list.  However the length of time varies.  What helps to be seen quickly is a client’s availability to attend.  When a counsellor’s work with a client ends, then that day and time slot becomes available.


How long do sessions last?

Therapy sessions last up to 50 minutes.  We suggest you allow an hour plus travelling time to and from your appointment.


What happens if I miss an appointment?

If you have to miss an appointment, we ask that you give us at least 48 hours’ notice so that we don’t charge you for it.  Any exceptions to this will be explained at the Assessment appointment.


Do you have disabled access?

Yes, we have a ramp for access to the building and a counselling room which can accommodate a wheelchair.  We also have loop systems.  However, please note that we do not have access to a disabled toilet.
